Industrial B2B SEO: reaching the buyer, not the reader

Turin has an industrial base that makes SEO harder to sell and more profitable to do: precision machining, components, automation, aerospace, tooling, surface treatments. Companies turning over millions with twenty customers, who hear the same sentence in every SEO analysis: "your keywords get 40 searches a month."

That sentence is true and irrelevant. In a market where a single customer can be worth hundreds of thousands a year, forty monthly searches with real intent is an excellent channel. The problem is that almost every SEO approach in circulation is calibrated for retail, where volume matters, and applied to B2B it produces pointless work.

This article covers how to set up SEO for a company selling to other companies: who actually searches, which queries matter, what belongs on the pages, and how to measure something that closes nine months later.

The person searching is not the person signing

The first mistake is treating the client company as a person. In industrial B2B the decision involves at least three roles, searching for different things at different moments, needing different pages.

The practical consequence is that an industrial site does not need more content: it needs different content for each of the three. Most sites we analyse speak only to the third — about us, our history, our values — while the searches that bring work come from the first.

Open your site and ask: can an engineer checking whether your part fits their application decide it from what is here? If the answer is "they have to call us", you have just explained why enquiries are scarce.

The queries nobody owns

In B2B there are entire families of very high-intent searches that almost nobody works on, because they do not appear in keyword tools with interesting volumes.

Part numbers and codes

Article codes, standard designations, material names. Anyone searching this way knows exactly what they need.

Numeric specifications

Diameters, tolerances, temperatures, flow rates, strength classes. Long, precise queries with almost no competition.

Technical problem

"why does the coating flake after", "alternative to X for high temperatures". The searcher has an active problem.

Alternative to a supplier

Someone searching for a replacement has already decided to switch. The most profitable commercial query in B2B.

These queries share three properties: low volume, almost no competition, very high conversion. They are the exact opposite of what a keyword research tool suggests chasing, which is why the best way to find them is not a tool but your own data.

The impressions you already collect contain phrasings nobody chose: codes, designations and technical questions you surface for without having planned it. What an industrial product page must contain

The difference between a site that generates enquiries and one that generates phone calls asking for basic information comes down to five elements, and none of them is copywriting.

  1. Measurable data, not adjectivesDimensional ranges, tolerances, materials handled, production capacity, operating temperatures and pressures. "High quality" is not data; "tolerance +/- 0.01 mm on batches up to 5,000 units" is - and it captures searches from anyone with that constraint.
  2. What you do not doA stated limit builds more credibility than any list of services, and it filters out enquiries you would have declined anyway. In our analyses it is the most absent and most effective element.

Where this content comes from

Not from marketing. From the engineering office and the sales team, who have been repeating the same ten answers for years. Forty minutes of recorded interview produces material no competitor can copy, because it is published nowhere.

Search volume is the wrong metric

Six visits a month is a ridiculous result for an online shop and an excellent channel for a company working with fifteen customers. The calculation that matters is not traffic but this: what a new customer is worth, how many enquiries it takes to close one, how many visits it takes to produce an enquiry. Those three numbers settle in ten minutes whether the channel makes sense — and in industrial B2B the answer is almost always yes, even at volumes that would look derisory elsewhere.

Your real competition is not who you think

In B2B, whoever occupies the first page is rarely a direct competitor. It is industrial marketplaces, sector portals, supplier directories and distributors.

This changes strategy in two ways. First: on some generic queries competing makes no sense, because portals have twenty years of accumulated authority no manufacturer will match. Second, and more important: those portals are generic by construction. They cannot publish your real tolerance, your lead time, your machine park, your application case. The entire territory of specificity is unoccupied.

Before deciding where to invest it is worth looking at who genuinely holds the positions: in rank tracking, with three real competitors configured and the page type noted for each query, the split between queries worth contesting and queries to walk past emerges quickly.

A common trap

Subscribing to a sector portal and considering online presence solved. The portal generates contacts and owns the relationship: you are an interchangeable supplier in a list. Your own pages, with your own data, are the only asset that cannot be taken away when you stop paying the subscription.

The contact form that undoes everything else

In industrial B2B the most frequent breaking point is neither traffic nor content: it is the moment a convinced engineer tries to make contact and finds a form with name, email and "message".

The problem is twofold. That form collects nothing useful, so sales has to call back for the basics and the cycle stretches by days. And it implicitly signals that the company is not set up to receive a technical enquiry — which, in a market where supplier reliability is being assessed, is itself a signal.

What a quote request form should ask in a technical context: the type of process or component, indicative quantities, material, required timing, and above all the ability to attach a drawing or specification. That field alone changes enquiry quality more than any other site change: someone attaching a drawing has a real project, someone who does not is often just testing the market.

A second element, trivial and almost always missing: the direct number for the engineering or sales office, in plain text and tappable, not hidden behind a switchboard. In many industrial negotiations the first call happens while the engineer still has the drawing open, and if there is no number at that moment they move to the next supplier.

It is worth measuring. If visits to capability pages rise and enquiries do not, the problem has moved: it is no longer visibility, it is the handover from content to contact. That diagnosis takes ten minutes and stops you investing in the wrong half of the funnel.

Time, which in B2B is a technical factor

An aspect standard editorial plans ignore: in industrial B2B the cycle from first visit to order runs for months. That has two concrete consequences.

The first concerns expectations. A page published in March may produce its first enquiry in September and its first order in January. Anyone judging SEO at ninety days on revenue always concludes it does not work, because they are measuring before the cycle closes.

The second concerns the system's memory. If you do not record when a page was published and when impressions appeared, in January nobody will be able to connect the order to work done ten months earlier. In B2B a baseline is not good practice: it is the precondition for demonstrating anything, and it has to be in place before you start.

A realistic first six months

Month 1 — Collection. Interviews with the engineering office and the sales team: the ten recurring questions, the real limits, the application cases. In parallel, extract the queries you already surface for without having chosen them.

Month 2 — Capability pages. One page per process or product family, carrying the five elements described above. These are not marketing pages: they are readable technical documents.

Months 3-4 — Problem pages. The recurring technical questions, each with a complete answer and a link to the corresponding capability page. These capture people with an active problem who do not yet know who to call.

Months 5-6 — Cases and proof. Real applications with numbers, anonymised where necessary. In B2B a reference outweighs any argument, and almost nobody publishes one for fear of exposing the client.
